England 1966 was a World Cup full of unexpected results, suspicions and "strange" decision made by referees.
The defending champion Brazil suffered the injury of Pelé and could not go beyond the first round. Italy did the same after being defeated 1-0 by North Korea. In the quarterfinals Uruguay was eliminated by Germany and Argentina by the local England in games that raised many suspicions. The most know example is Argentinean Antonio Rattin being ejected against England by "the look on his face" according to the German referee.
In the final match, the football inventors conquered their first world championship after defeating Germany 4-2, with two controversial
goals in extra time. |
